A Brief Easter Message 2014

A Brief Easter Message (2014) :  On The Glorious Reality of The Resurrection, and on The Work of Saving Souls That Continues After Death

By Ken K. Gourdin

Many ask how God, in His infinite wisdom, justice, and mercy, could consign untold billions to hell simply because they never had a chance to hear of, and to accept, Christianity.  For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the answer is that if He were to do so, such a consignation would be neither wise, nor just, nor merciful.  And so He prepared a way that they could, indeed, accept His message.

Like every other Christian, I rejoice this time of year with the knowledge that Christ rose from the dead on the third day following His crucifixion.  As the Apostle Paul testified:

19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.1

If Christ wasn’t on the Earth in the three days between His death and His glorious Resurrection, where was He?  Peter answers this question:

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison[.]2

In the sixth verse of next chapter of his Epistle, Peter explains why Christ went and preached to the “spirits in prison”:

6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.3

I testify of the glorious reality of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  I testify that the work of Salvation continues beyond the grave in the world of spirits.  For both of these wonderful gifts, may we thank God this glorious Easter season!  Peace to you and yours.

I hope, one day, to write some motivational nonfiction, a decent-selling novel, a stage play, and a screen play.
