What I’m Thankful For

Just Ten (Of Many!) Things I’m Thankful For This Thanksgiving Day

By Ken K. Gourdin

1 My family, both earthly and heavenly. I know many have family circumstances that are far less than ideal, to put it mildly. In the film God’s Army, when Elder Allen reveals his chaotic family life, Elder Dalton says, “At least your real Father is there for you.” Incredulous, Allen replies, “I haven’t seen him in 13 years.” Dalton answers, “I was talking about your Real Father.” See also 1st Nephi, chapter 1, verse 1 in The Book of Mormon: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/1?lang=eng
2 My health, comparatively speaking. As much as I wish I didn’t have to deal with certain issues, that’s definitely a “glass-half-full” situation — indeed, despite the things I might wish were different, it’s a “glass-almost-overflowing” situation. Whenever I’m tempted to ask God why what has gone wrong has gone wrong, God tends to remind me what has gone right. I’m fortunate to have gotten the kind of medical treatment I have. I thank God for the miracles and marvels of modern medical science. See, e.g., here:

3 The freedoms I enjoy. As just one of many examples, I have written things about The White House’s Current Occupant that could have gotten me imprisoned if I had written them in other places, about other leaders. See, e.g., here: https://greatgourdini.wordpress.com/2013/06/25/a-perhaps-incongruous-post-on-flag-burning-in-honor-of-flag-day/.

5 While I often despair that I will not have the opportunity to utilize my talents to their fullest extent, I am thankful for them. As I mentioned in #3, I’m thankful for my “right to write,” but, more than that, I’m grateful for the ability to do so well. God willing, one day, I will reach—and touch—a wider audience with something (or some things) I have to say.
6 The Atonement of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. See Alma 7:11-12 in The Book of Mormon and Section 45, Verses 3 through 5 in The Doctrine and Covenants (linked below):

7 Examples from people in the Scriptures whom the Lord still was able to use to do worthwhile things, even though they were far from perfect:

About kenngo1969

Just as others must breathe to live, I must write. I have been writing creatively almost ever since I learned to write, period! I have written fiction, book- and article-length nonfiction, award-winning poetry, news, sports, features, and op-eds. I hope, one day, to write some motivational nonfiction, a decent-selling novel, a stage play, and a screen play.
